Chief Jerry Nystrom
Chief Jerry Nystrom began his law enforcement career with the Hill County Sheriff's Office in 1987. In 1993, he became a Patrolman for the Havre Police Department. In the year 2000, he took an assignment with the Tri-Agency Task Force as a Narcotics Investigator. In 2001, he was assigned the duty of Team Leader/Task Force Commander of the drug task force and continued in this position until being promoted to Chief of Police in May of 2008.
Chief Nystrom has received a special commission from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He was also deputized by the Federal Bureau of Investigations as a Special Agent and as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal during his assignment with the drug task force.
Chief Nystrom is a graduate of the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and is a certified instructor in Police Sniper/Marksmanship, Police Patrol Rifle, Search Warrants, and Basic Drug Investigations.

Assistant Chief Gabe Matosich
Assistant Chief Gabe Matosich began his law enforcement career by attending Montana State University Bozeman in 1988. ACOP Matosich graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Social Science with an emphasis in Criminal Justice. Shortly after that, ACOP Matosich was hired by the Wheatland County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy.
In 1997, ACOP Matosich moved to Havre where he was hired by the Havre Police Department. ACOP Matosich was promoted to the position of Sergeant in 2001 where he served until 2008 when he was promoted to the position of Assistant Chief of Police.
ACOP Matosich has received numerous certifications and trainings to including Field Training Officer, Employee Background Investigations, Reid Interview and Interrogation, Death Investigations and Basic Crime Scene Processing. Captain Bill Wilkinson
Captain Bill Wilkinson began his career in 1973 as a Marine in the United States Marine Corps. Capt. Wilkinson served with the Marine Corps until 1979. In 1986, Capt. Wilkinson was hired by the Hill County Sheriff’s Office as a part-time detention officer/dispatcher. Capt. Wilkinson became a full time dispatcher, then transferred into the detention facility full time until 1990, when he was hired as a patrolman for the Havre Police Department. During Capt. Wilkinson’s time with the Hill County Sheriff’s Office, he was also involved in the first group of Hill County Sheriff’s Reserves.
Capt. Wilkinson was hired by the Havre Police Department in 1990. Capt. Wilkinson was promoted to the position of Sergeant in 1999. In 2008, he was promoted to the position of Lieutenant. In April 2010, he was promoted to the position of Captain. Capt. Wilkinson currently handles internal affairs investigations, manages sexual and violent offenders, warrant service, evidence manager, reserve officer coordinator, as well as being the special event coordinator.
Capt. Wilkinson has obtained several training certificates in his lengthy career. These certificates include Death Investigation, Field Training Officer, First Line Supervisor, Mid Level Management, as well as evidence handling techniques and tracking. Capt. Wilkinson also graduated from the MLEA Police Officer’s Basic course, but also attended the first Detention Officer Basic Course offered by MLEA. Capt. Detective Lieutenant Larry Virts
Lieutenant Larry Virts started his career in 2002 as a reserve officer with the Bridger Police Department in Bridger Montana. At the same time Lt. Virts also worked as a Reserve/part-time officer with the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office. In 2004, Lt. Virts attended the Montana Law Enforcement Academy in Helena. Shortly after attending the Montana Law Enforcement Academy, Lt. Virts worked for the Red Lodge Police Department, Fromberg Police Department and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office as a part-time/reserve officer.
In 2005 Lt. Virts was hired by the Havre Police Department as a full time police officer. In September 2008, Lt. Virts was promoted to the position of Sergeant, and later promoted to his current position in April 2010.
Lt. Virts has received several training certificates during his career. These certificates include Field Training Officer, Intoxilyzer Senior Operator, Reid Interview/Interrogation, First Line Supervisor, Basic Crime Scene Processing, and Tazer instructor certified. Lt. Virts currently handles all major investigations as well as being the training coordinator for the patrol division. Lt. Virts also supervises the FTO program and the motor fleet.
